Losses – Advantage: Texas. (The Sooners lost on a neutral field; Texas lost on the road.)
Victories – Advantage: Texas. (The Sooners would have four very impressive victories if they beat Oklahoma State. But the Longhorns would have the only victory that matters—a win over the Sooners.)
Strength of schedule – Advantage: Texas. (No FCS opponents were on the schedule, and it played Missouri.)
Oklahoma is the hot team as the regular season comes to an end. But Texas is a better team.
The Longhorns have already proved it on the field.
A hysterical quote (in hindsight) from the 1st season of 30 Rock, episode 15:
Liz Lemon: What are you going to do if they ask you about ‘08?
Jenna: Well, of course I want Hilary to be the first woman President…
Liz: Yuch, no. Obama. You support Barak Obama. Remember… you liked those pictures of him at the beach.
Jenna: Oh, RIGHT! Obama… what is he? Hispanic?
Liz: No, he’s black.
Jenna: And he running for PRESIDENT? Good luck.
I had a phone interview with Facebook today for a Program Manager position (which equates to what people at Microsoft or other firms might think of as Product management). I spoke with Gareth, a Program Manager in charge of Facebook’s efforts targeted at game developers.
Without going into the details of the interview, it went very well (I think). It consisted of briefly discussing the group (Platform) and position (Program Manager), my background and then Q&A designed to see “how I think”. The reason I’m blogging about this experience is that I’m really interested in some of the ideas that I came up with, primarily geared towards attracting better developers and monetizing the Facebook platform.
Facebook App Engine: an admitted piggyback on Google (and other firm’s) cloud computing efforts. But I think this strategy has unique benefits for Facebook, in that applications developed on and hosted within their cloud will more directly benefit their ecosystem, while Google has to make a more roundabout case for expanding the web and possible making acquisitions easier. Facebook just earmarked $100 million for buying servers, and it just makes sense to extend that infrastructure to their developers (and thus partners).
Facebook IDE: I tried to make a case for a Visual Studio (or Eclipse) -like tool for developers that eased the process of coding Facebook apps. I think you could probably create a fork or plug-in for Eclipse to accomplish this.
Payment Processing: I think Facebook needs to take a cue from Apple and bring micro-payments (under $1) to their platform. This would allow developers to charge for truly useful applications, or even enable micro-payments within popular applications (an example of this would be charging $0.50 to pick-up free agents in a fantasy football league).
AdSense-compete: if I’m a 3rd-party website, what’s more compelling to display to users who choose to log-in via Facebook Connect? Ads targeted by the “content” of my site? Or ads targeted at the users themselves (based on the reams of data Facebook has)? I think the latter.
I’ve been watching old episodes of Family Guy on-line and I ran into an episode where the New England Patriots lay the smack on my Washington Redskins:
It’s a sad day when your favorite team is being demolished by Peter Griffin.
I don’t have too much to say, except that Obama laid out some frank words of caution last night that we need to listen to. It’s not over. Change isn’t here. And we’re all going to have to pitch in, find a spirit of sacrifice and love for our country, or this election will simply be an empty promise and a dead end. Obama, Congress, America… let’s go!
