I just read BadBlood bemoan a play he made in NL that reminded me of just how awful my NL ring game play has been lately. I used to play NL ring games (anywhere from $0.25/$0.50 to $1/$2) almost exclusively. I would sprinkle in a SNG to break the monotony. Over the past 6 months, it has been the reverse: mostly SNG play, with some ring games thrown in. And the results have been terrible.
The point in BadBlood analysis being that good, NL ring play is about making a small number of big decisions for other player’s stacks. I have (sadly) become so bad at making good calls at these points that I simply don’t trust myself to play NL on-line right now.
But, it wasn’t always like this, and that makes me feel better. I just need to find a way to, slowly, get back to where I was.

Over the last 8 days, I’ve played in 6 multi-table (45 player) SNG’s on FullTilt. I’ve placed 1st place in 2 of them, and didn’t cash in the rest. Now, before you think I’m manipulating the dates that I’m examining, the first 45-player tourney I ever played (7/15/06), I won. Then, I won again today.
I find this curious, not because I think I’m good at tournaments, but because I know I’m bad. My record in single-table SNG’s (dating back to March) is abysmal. 13 cashes out of 69 tourneys for a net loss of $92.50 (I only play $5 or $10 SNG’s).
So, what does this mean? That my patience (or tight playing) helps in longer tourneys but hurts in shorter ones? Or maybe I just got lucky a couple of times, and none of this mean anything?
This morning I contacted the McCombs Admissions department to discuss my desire to defer my enrollment. After spending a week thinking about DC, DCKickball, the lawsuit, Austin, and everything else in between, I decided that (if they would let me) deferring a year would be my best option.
According to the admissions officer I spoke with, this would not be a problem. I just need to send them an email and pay my $750 deposit. I was frankly stunned to hear how painless the deferral would be, as I fully expected it to be either difficult or out of the question.
So! I hope to get this in writing in the next couple of days, but it would seem that I’m going to be in DC for another year or so. Get used to it.
