Teacher charged with having sex with 14-year-old student

TAMPA, Florida (AP)—
A 23-year-old middle-school teacher was charged with
having sex with a 14-year-old student in a classroom, at her apartment and,
once, in a vehicle while the teen’s 15-year-old cousin drove.
Detectives said that the cousins provided matching statements incriminating
Debra Beasley Lafave and that the 14-year-old described Lafave’s apartment
and her tattoos and birthmarks.
Lafave, who teaches reading in the Tampa suburb of Temple Terrace, was
arrested there last week on lewd and lascivious battery charges, accused of
having sex with the teen earlier this month at her apartment and in a
portable classroom at Greco Middle School.
She was out on bond on those charges when she turned herself in Monday in
Marion County, about 80 miles north of Tampa, where the cousin lives. There,
she is charged with lewd and lascivious battery and exhibition. She was
released Monday on $25,000 bail.</p?
Her lawyer, John Fitzgibbons, said he was not ready to respond to the
allegations. “There is a presumption of innocence in this country,” he said.
The teen told investigators that he and Lafave got to know each other during
a class trip last month, and their sexual relationship began June 3.
The boy told detectives that Lafave told him that her months-old marriage
was in trouble and that she was attracted to him because having sex with him
was not allowed.
Lafave, who has worked with the Hillsborough County school system for two
years, has been placed on administrative duty and could be suspended without
pay at the next school board meeting, officials said.
In Marion County, authorities say Lafave had sex with the student in the
back of her sport utility vehicle while the cousin drove them around the
Ocala area.
I got my first quads on-line this past weekend. I ended up making alot of money on the hand ($25 PL), although I don’t know why. You see, I started out with Kx. Normally, I fold this hand, but I was in the LP and decided to see the flop. The flop comes up KJx. So, I’ve got top pair and decide to throw out a bet. Two players call me. Now, bear in mind, two more King are coming so neither of them had a King. Turn brings a King. More betting! River brings a King, I bet the pot, and the two guys call! Insane. I show my quads and naturally they muck. Very surreal.
So, I had a couple of brief but good sessions. I’m now at +$68 (counting bonus money) and -$147 (not counting bonus money). Once I get back to even, I’ll have made $215 in bonus money. At which point I’ll cash out a good deal of money from these sites, leaving enough to start grinding with. No more $30 SnG’s.
Enticing line-up at the 930 Club on July 10th: Phantom Planet @ 6pm and then the X-Ecutioners at 10:30pm. I’m not entirely sure which show I’d rather see. Right now I’m leaning towards Phantom Planet (and looking forward to a live version of Turn, Smile, Shift, Repeat). Anyone else want to go?
Well, more or less. Obviously the posts I’ve been putting up this week are gone. That had to do with the migration process I used to import my old posts (plus they weren’t really important enough to save anyway). Comments have been imported, although 67 of them are missing the name of the person who left the comment.
My mailing lists are kind of working. Still need to work some kinks out. I’ll be very happy once this is over.
Those of you who are subscribed to any of the mailing lists I manage (kickball, poker, etc) may have noticed things amiss yesterday. This was due to a not-so-seamless migration of my email and email-services from my old machine (rome.cubanlinks.org, PII box) to my new machine (taurus.cubanlinks.org, PIII box) which was donated by, and thus christened after, Taurus.
Anyway, things seem to be fixed at the moment, and I thought I’d describe some of the upgrades associated with my migration.
I’ve probably never been prouder of my kickball team than I was yesterday. I realize how absurd that sounds, given that we’re playing kickball, but yesterday’s game was a war. Because of some no shows we had to play down a player in the field. Elissa was playing with a bad back and my knee and foot were banged-up. To top things off, Hege and I battled each other for the Worst Possible Play trophy.
The worst play came when I had to throw a bunter out at first. My throw to Nic sailed wide right, pulling her into the path of the runner. This guy slammed into her, more or less flipping her 180 degrees. Naturally, Nic shook it off and kept playing. My throws to first got so bad, Akhil played in from the outfield and backed Nic at first. Just a horrendous day at pitcher.
And despite ALL of this, we smacked down F.U.C.K. 5-2. We’re now leading the division (thanks to a Monkeys choke-fest on Monday). Prouder of my teammates I have not been.
The people who made the HBO water-cooler commercials have obviously never been to my office. I haven’t found one person who watches the HBO Sunday night lineup here. I mean, I’m sure if I set-up a dragnet I’d find somebody, but that would be a little more trouble than it’s worth. So here I sit, unable to discuss the golden-age of television drama that we’re living in.
I got home from work yesterday and promptly hopped on Pacific. My reward was yet another win in a 10-handed $2.50 tourney. And this time, it wasn’t easy. I took some horrible beats early when I was outdrawn to the river. To make matters worse, my WiFi flaked out, and by the time I got it working again, I was the short stack with ~T350 compared to the average of T1200. Still, I plugged away at it, stole some pots, got some decent cards, and let other players knock each other out. I was actually ecstatic to make it to the final 3. Once the blinds got high enough, I was in heaven. I love stealing or semi-stealing pots. Most of these low-limit players can’t stand putting large sums of money into a pot pre-flop, and that’s easy to take advantage of. Despite some bad beats on the river, I’m really enjoying the low-limits.
Eddie, Pete, Dan, Hege and Margaret came by later. We watched some of the Lakers-Pistons game and then bounced over to Millie and Al’s where we met up with Akhil and his crew. Good times were had by all, some Bob Dylan was sung, and then it was off to that new place on 18th (whose name escapes me at the moment). It actually kind of sucked. Some kind of super-trendy diner/bar thing. I mean, don’t get me wrong, there were tons of beautiful babies in there, but they’ll be gone looking for the new trend sooner rather than later. So, we’ll see if this place holds up.
