Battle of the Sexes

You suck Emily! You and James suck!!!!
I promised Greg I’d rant about the Battle of the Sexes, so here goes:

Emily is a total bitch, and James deserves her. What a backstabbing chump. The guys had the awesome team vibe going to whole season, and James had to screw it all up by trying to sell-out Shane. I’m glad Antoine saw through that B.S. and sent him on his way. Then, just as it dawns on Emily that her boyfriend is packing his bags, she “realizes” that she has family issues that require her to leave the island too. Jesus Christ. This is the same girl that deep-sixed competitors like Rachel and Veronica, and now she’s going to bail on the girls.

Of course, the worst thing about last night’s episode was the stunning broadcast snafu that took place. For those who don’t know, after coming back from a commercial break during the midpoint of the episode, instead of showing the rest of the episode, the first half repeated. I was blown away. Greg and I thought we were having a senior moment. I promise you, program directors in New York were running around pulling their hair out in clumps. Finally, MTV’s well-known bargain-basement production costs have come back to haunt them.

Swim Here! The Waters Warm!
Will, Linton, Mike and I drove down to the University of Florida this weekend to visit an old poker buddy of ours, Shantanu. We left Thursday after work at around 6pm and arrived in Gainesville around 6am. Will promptly asked Shantanu to drink a beer with him. Little did we know, but this would set the tone for the entire weekend.

I won’t go into too many details. To quote the Real World, What happens in Florida, stays in Florida. There was copious amounts of consumption. The women never disappointed. The weather was spectacular. It was great to see Shantanu, a better host you will not find. And it was really cool to spend 24 hours in a car with Linton, Mike and Will. There’s something surreal about stopping for dinner at Cafe Risque and then talking about God and the nature of the universe for the next hour and a half in the car.

I’ve finally gotten around to setting up a blog for my kickball division, the Independence division of the World Adult Kickball Association (WAKA). Hopefully this will be a good medium to share all the good times that come with summer kickball. If you’re in the division and have something to say or cool photos to share, send them my way.

Pictures from Akhil’s party are up. This is a small subset of the insanity that went down that night.

Excerpts from a morning IM conversation:

  • i do remember shotgunning a beer
  • i don’t remember any cops
  • i do remember Suzanne getting sly to my half-asian fascination
  • I don’t remember slobbering on a bunch of girls on my way out
  • i don’t remember falling down from laughing at my own joke that no one understood
  • i don’t remember grabbing Stacy’s thigh
  • i do remember getting Pizza Boli’s

God, this weekend was awesome. This is where I realize the upside of suffering from seasonal affective disorder: insane mental highs based purely on sunshine and warmth. I finally pulled the cobwebs off my bike and took it out for a spin. I needed a new tube and a longer nozzle for my rear wheel, so I took it down the Bicycle Pro Shop. My friend Sarah works there, so we chatted a bit and I was on my way.

Of course, I found out quickly how out of shape I was. Imagine that, 5 months off a bike can take a toll. I probably tooled around for 10 miles or so on Saturday. On Sunday I met up with Sarah and her friend Mike to bike down to Mount Vernon. Normally this 34 mile round-trip is a nice work-out for me, but yesterday I almost died as I biked back in to Adams Morgan. Mike’s the kind of guy who averages 20 MPH on a 60 miles ride, so things got kicked up a notch. Good times.

My Linux server is pimp-slapping me around like a nickel ho. I tried to upgrade my OpenSSH installation to 3.6.1. My previous install was 3.0.1, and was woefully out of date. So, I install the new SSH binaries and reboot my computer.

Naturally, everything explodes. Despite my money start-up scripts, nothing comes up (save httpd). My box is hosted out at my buddy’s hosting facility and I was forced to wait for him to schlep out to some random building and find out what was wrong. He logs-on and discovers that my SSH install is a shambles, and for some reason will not authenticate users.

Anyway, my system has been down for hours at this point, so I ask him to start-up my vital services (SMTP, IMAP, and HTTP) and promise to come over myself tomorrow morning and fix the rest. What a show.

Verizon: The Anti-Christ of Utility Companies

I moved into my new apartment on March 15th. My original date for the installation of my phone line was March 17th. By the time I picked up a phone and got a dial tone it was April 1st.

While that might not sound so bad, you first need to understand the constant stream of bullshit that I got for their CSRs. Every day I would call and inquire to the status of my order. EVERY DAY, I would be told the same thing: We’re sending someone out [this evening, tomorrow morning]. The next day would come, there would be no dial tone, and I would call back and repeat the process. It became a running joke in my apartment and at work.

Eventually I flipped out and demanded to speak to a manager on Monday, March 31st. This was a day after I got a voice-mail on my cell phone from an Verizon cable tech telling me: There are problems with the lines. Blah blah. We fix the issues, and have your service on in 24 hours. So, the CSR tells me no manager is available at the moment, but she’ll have one return my call by 7pm. 7:01pm rolls around and I call back. By some chance I get the same lady. She recognizes me and puts me through to a manager. I strongly voice my displeasure, and he explains to me they’re doing the best they can, etc. He promises to have someone out the next day.

I got home from work yesterday and, purely out of habit, checked to see if there was a dial tone. Indeed there was! Of course, the hilarious part is that I still need to get DSL. I’d say the over/under on that would be June 1st.
